Generally speaking, moist or semi moist foods are heat treated in steam or hot water distillation packaging containers to achieve sterilization, so these foods need to be cooked and packaged.
These packages use aluminum foil as a barrier layer, which is difficult to recycle. Mondi has developed an innovative high barrier film to replace aluminum foil, which can maintain high temperature during distillation and achieve shorter processing time. The new single material cooking packaging is completely recyclable, providing a special shelf life for single material packaging solutions, and reducing potential food waste.
Mondi spent more than two years researching and testing the product to ensure that it meets important application requirements. As part of its commitment to sustainable development, the launch of RetortTouch recyclable products is another step towards Mondi’s goals.
At the beginning of 2021, Mondi created three sustainable packaging for the new vegetarian product line of food manufacturer Orkla. It is mainly used in Orkla’s corn cakes, corn chips and corn roll flavoring products.
Corncake is Mondi’s first food packaging to adopt its “BarrierPack Recyclable” solution. The package is made of a single material with high barrier property and light weight. The sealed adhesive tape can keep the freshness of food and extend the shelf life.
In order to maintain the crispness and fresh taste of corn chips, Mondi uses metal free high resistance laminate, which makes the new packaging solution completely recyclable. This package also avoids the leakage of grease inside.

At present, PVA coated barrier and EVOH barrier are widely used in single environmental protection structure. For some dry food and daily chemical products, the water and oxygen resistance are basically comparable to traditional multi material packaging, but the shelf life of food is shorter than that of conventional composite packaging, and the cost is more than 20%~30% higher than that of ordinary packaging.
However, the barrier effect of single structure soft bag is still limited for oil blocking, light blocking, chemical resistance and other issues, so it is difficult to be widely used in all food packaging at present.
