We often see eye mark on the flexible pouches. Lots of experienced workers will suggest to add eye marks in pouch making. This will help it easier to make pouches, and the pouches they make will look better and in good shape.
Today we will talk about 5 things you need to know about eye mark in pouch making.
It’s an in-depth article that takes 15 minutes to read.

An Eye Mark is a small rectangular printed area located near the edge of the printed flexible packaging material.
A sensor on the FFS (form fill seal) machine reads the eye mark to:
Identify packaging material
Control the material position
Coordinate the separation and cutting of the flexible packaging material.
To package products with flexible packaging, the printed material is supplied on a continuous roll and fed into the FFS machine where the sensor reads the eye mark to:
Indicate when to cut individual units,
Fold the material,
Seal the sides (creating the packaging’s shape),
Fill with the product,
And then seal the final side.
It’s important to note that the eye mark pathway should be clear of obstructing design or text to ensure the sensor reads it properly.
The size of the eye mark will not be too small or too big.
If it is too small, then the sensor will have difficult to read it.
If it is too big, it will occupy too many areas on the flexible packaging, which will make the bag design not so beautiful.
Normally the size as below:
Width: from 2mm to 10mm, and 5mm is a perfect width.
Length: No less than 5mm, 15mm to 20mm is very good length for eye mark.
Basically you can put eye mark anywhere you want on the laminated pouch. But we do have better suggestion from designer’s view.
Normally we will put it on the bottom of the pouch, so it will not hurt the total design of the bag. Or you can make it on the position where there is a side gusset, then it is even better.
But no matter it is on the front, back or side gusset, it is always good to have in on the bottom of the bag.
Color of the eye mark is very important, it is highly related to the eye mark quality.
If the color is too light, then the sensor will have difficulty to read it.
If the color is not that obvious different with the colors close to the eye mark, the sensor will also have difficult reading it.
So the best choice is dark color, and the color very different from the colors nearby.
Tips:
Black is the most common colors we can see for eye mark.
If you are using rotogravure printing in custom packaging, and you need printing plate for each colors. Then you might can use the color which appear in other areas if it is suitable for eye mark color, then you don’t need to make an extra one printing plate.
First of all, we will need to check the eye mark size and color. If the size and color are no problem, then you can simply stop the machine, adjust the rewind roll on the machine to make it easier to cut, then it should be ok. Orelse it is not the eye mark problem, it is the flexible packaging rewind roll problem.
