High Barrier Recyclable pouches are the pouches fully recyclable, and with high barrier function. Normally it is made by mono material with high barrier coating. Unlike the traditional high barrier it is using metalized PET or foil which is not recyclable.
It mainly included:
Standard version: MOPP/CPP, OPP/MCPP (this is thinner packaging for Potato chips, less than 100g)
Heavy duty version: High barrier Mono-material PE: High barrier PE/PE, MDOPE/high barrier PE/PE, MDOPE/high barrier MPE/PE (This is thicker packaging for weight of more than 250g)
MOPP/CPP and OPP/MCPP are easier in technology; actually you can see this in the market everywhere. The metalized on OPP and CPP are not that difficult, and the cost is about the same when comparing to previous non-recyclable high barrier pouches.
But the weak point is the total thickness for MOPP/CPP and OPP/MCPP can only be 70 micron. It is good to pack light weight items such as potato chips. But cannot pack heavy weight items.
High barrier PE/PE, MDOPE/high barrier PE/PE, MDOPE/high barrier MPE/PE can be with thickness of up to 200 micron, so it is no problem to hold heavy weight items. Actually it can even hold up to 25kgs, such as big pet food bag.
When the technology of high barrier mono material packaging is not that mature, some people use MDOPE to laminate co-extruded PE/EVOH as recyclable high barrier materials. But this is old version which is not suitable for today.

Actually when it is single layer packaging, it is all recyclable. The biggest problem for flexible packaging recyclability is the high barrier version. Cause the traditional VMPET and foil are not recyclable.
Now we have high barrier mono material recyclable pouches, this will make sure we have high barrier function, and recyclable.
Secondly High barrier function is important for many packed items. Such as food packaging. It will need high barrier to protect the food quality. The taste, smell, freshness, color, and shelf life. Actually if you don’t need high barrier function, you can use OPP/PE, this can also pack up to 25kgs, and the packaging is very stable, it has been in the market for about 20 years. But you can also have MDOPE/PE mono material pouch, this can also pack 25kgs. But all these are without high barrier.
The high barrier coating on PE and high barrier metalized PE is new for only 2 years.
