CE FLEX and Mono Material Pouches

Plastic flexible packaging is widely used nowadays. No matter it is for food, cosmetic or industrial segments, plastic bags are using everywhere. All these will bring a large quantity of plastic waste and plastic pollution.

These packaging materials with complex components have great problems in recycling. In Europe, there is a special Association for such flexible packaging materials: CE FLEX; which is the abbreviation of the circular economy for flexible packaging. The great effort of this organization is to realize the recycling of flexible packaging.

The goal of CE FLEX is to realize the recycling of all flexible packaging by 2025, which is of course a very ambitious goal. At present, more than 180 member units have participated in the organization, including the familiar end brands such as Nestle, Unilever and Procter & Gamble. BASF, Basel, DuPont, Henkel and Dow are members of the organization. In order to achieve this goal, CE FLEX believes that the following five steps need to be carried out.

  1. Drive collection of all flexible packaging for sorting & recycling.
  2. Sort the suitable mono material fractions so that they are available to be recycled.
  3. Redesign multi material flexible packaging to mono material with existing recycling streams.
  4. Identify solutions and develop capabilities to sort/recycle the remaining fractions.
  5. End markets for all recycled flexible packaging materials.

A very important step in CE FLEX is to use mono-material packaging. For aluminum foil packaging, to minimize the use of metal, so that the content of single material exceeds 80%, so as to facilitate subsequent recycling.

CE LFEX’s current goal is to change multi-layer packaging (such as PP, aluminum, PET) and other multi-layer materials into mono recyclable materials. Of course, this is not a simple material replacement, because aluminum and PET play a great role in blocking Oxygen. It is not possible to remove the functions of keeping fresh and keeping quality of packaging for the sake of a mono material. This is the real technology. For example, in the following example, the packaging of cat food is changed from multi-layer film to relatively mono-material PP film. Here, the barrier effect of PP needs to be improved to achieve such replacement.
