Mono Material Pouch is the pouch made by mono-material; which also means it is made by single type of material. Normally it is mono-material PP pouch and mono-material PE pouch, these 2 types of pouches are the most often see mono material pouch nowadays.
The biggest advantage of mono material pouch is 100% fully recyclable, without the difficulty of splitting or separating various materials.
A few years ago, if you want to say that a certain material flexible packaging is a mono material, you may be laughed at. As we know, the traditional flexible packaging used in food, medicine and cosmetics is made of multi-layer materials, which are made of different materials. Normally these flexible packaging is not recyclable, or very difficult to recycle.
But the situation changed now. More and more factories are using mono material PE pouches as laminated pouches; in this case it will be 100% recyclable.

Multi layer materials are typical as follows: outer layer for printing function, mid layer for barrier function, inner layer for hot sealing. Normally it is different materials.
When these three materials are combined, they can meet the packaging requirements of most products. The three materials have their own advantages. Therefore, after combining them, the performance is more excellent, which has always been the way of flexible laminated packaging. But the big problem of environmental pollution has always existed. It is a fatal disadvantage that it cannot be recycled after use.
Since plastic flexible packaging accounts for more than 50% of the packaging market and is the mainstream packaging method, which is why it is still using today even if it pollutes the environment.
But things have changed…
The mono material structure is MDO-PE/PE Thanks to the performance characteristic of the MOD-PE film we developed, so we have the chance to make it all mono material PE. The secret of its recycling lies in this mono material structure.
MDO-PE can be laminated with PE to form a mono material package, and can replace the film structure of PET/PE and BOPP/PE, so it meets the current general packaging requirements. Since the packaging requirements are met, and it is made of PE, it can be 100% recycled.
As we know we still need high barrier function for most of the food packaging. So it is important to carry high barrier function for mono material PE pouch.
Currently most of the factories are using coating, co-extrusion or lamination to the high barrier material and make it high barrier.
After testing for 2 years, we found that the best way is to do coating on MDO-PE film. In this case there is no problem in bag printing and bag making. While we can still have high barrier function.
We believe with more efforts, we will promote barrier MDO-PE film to all the markets, and you can see high barrier mono material PE pouches everywhere.
With the continuous improvement of people’s awareness of environmental protection, the upgrading of packaging materials has gradually reached a consensus in the industry. And mono material has become the leading direction of the flexible packaging industry.
In January 2020, the United Nations Environment plan report mentioned:
From the perspective of environmental protection trends at home and abroad, the government and major terminal brands are determined to use mono material recyclable packaging to promote the development of circular economy, which is the general trend.
Although there will be many challenges and technical problems in the research and development of mono material packaging, the recyclability of laminating mono material is feasible. Laminated mono material pouch makes flexible packaging recycling valuable and gives flexible packaging a second life. In general, the future market prospect of mono material PE laminated flexible packaging is promising.
