High barrier MDO-PE is new in the market, it is less than 1% of the MDO-PE film is high barrier.
Mostly it is standard MDO-PE film without any treatment. The quality is better than PE in film performance, but still it is not high barrier.

There are mainly 2 functions of high barrier MDO-PE film
High Barrier function: as we know high barrier function is import for some flexible pouches in production against oxygen and moisture. The traditional films are foil or metalized film (VMPET, MOPP, and MCPP); these are all good quality high barrier film. Now high barrier MDO-PE film is having the same high barrier function as the other films.
Recyclability: Actually there are always options for high barrier and transparent film. But when it comes to recyclability and high barrier, high barrier MDO-PE film is the best solution so far. It will make high barrier flexible packaging 100% recyclable.

For coated high barrier MDO-PE film, it is transparent.
For Metalized MDO-PE film, it looks like the color of metal, which is silver color. Just as foil, VMPET, MOPP and MCPP.
In this case, we will believe coated high barrier MDO-PE film is better cause it is transparent. Of course it only need 2 layers for recyclable pouch: high barrier MDO-PE/PE. While metalized MDO-PE will often used in mid layer which also means it needs at least 3 layers.
High barrier MDO-PE film is perfect in recyclability in this sustainable society. But why it is not well known in the market? And not too many factories use it for production.
The main reason is the technology of high barrier coating is not easy.
Actually most of the manufacturers are testing on the technology and not yet ready for mass production. Only a few of the suppliers with professional team and big investment are finally make the good quality high barrier MDO-PE.
We can foresee that in the coming 3-5 years, high barrier MDO-PE technology will be mature for most of the manufacturers, and that will be the time high barrier MDO-PE film will dominate the high barrier film market.

Currently the coating and metalized technology on MDO-PE film is new, so the cost is a little bit higher. It is about 10% higher cost then the traditional high barrier pouches.
But considering recyclability and sustainability, this cost increase is not a big percentage.
Actually if we choose coated high barrier MDO-PE, we will only need 2 layers of film. And less lamination on the recyclable pouch will decrease the cost and consume less energy.
We believe with the development of the technology, the high barrier MDO-PE made recyclable pouch will eventually have the same or even lower cost than our current traditional high barrier non-recyclable pouch.
